A new detail has surfaced about Bondi Beach attacker Sajid Akram, revealing he is originally from South Asia and migrated to Australia nearly 30 years ago. The incident, which targeted the Jewish community and is being considered an act of terrorism, stands as the most severe mass shooting in Australia in approximately three decades.
The casualty count has risen to 16, including 50-year-old Akram himself. His 24-year-old son, who is suspected to have been involved, was also shot during the attack and remains in critical condition at the hospital.
Indian authorities identified Akram as a native of Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana in southern India. Telangana police stated on Tuesday that Sajid Akram had visited India six times, primarily for family reasons, since moving to Australia in 1998. Officials added that his family members were unaware of any radical beliefs or activities, nor what caused his radicalization.
Australian officials mentioned that both father and son had traveled to the Philippines last month. The father was using an Indian passport, while the son carried an Australian one. The purpose of their trip is still under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined if they are connected to any terrorist organizations or if they received training during their visit.
