Bill Gates will not be delivering his keynote speech at the India AI Impact Summit on Thursday. This decision marks another challenge for the event, which has already been affected by logistical issues, a robot malfunction, and complaints from delegates about VIP traffic disruptions.
The reason for Gates’s absence was not disclosed. However, the Gates Foundation stated that the billionaire’s decision was made “to keep the focus on the AI Summit’s main priorities.”
This cancellation follows the release of emails by the U.S. Department of Justice last month that revealed communications between Jeffrey Epstein, a late financier and convicted sex offender, and staff members of the foundation. The documents show Gates and Epstein met multiple times after Epstein’s prison sentence to discuss expanding Gates’s philanthropic efforts. Gates has stated that their interactions were limited to discussions about charity work and acknowledged that meeting with Epstein was a mistake.
Founded in 2000 by Bill Gates, then-co-founder of Microsoft and his ex-wife Melinda, the Gates Foundation is among the world’s largest funders of health initiatives worldwide. Gates serves as the chair and a member of its board.
