Amazon founder Jeff Bezos predicts that in the next 10 to 20 years, massive data centers will be constructed in orbit, leveraging space-based solar power to ultimately surpass terrestrial data centers in efficiency. Speaking at Italian Tech Week in Turin, Bezos likened the current AI boom to the internet craze of the early 2000s, encouraging a hopeful outlook despite the potential for speculative bubbles.
The idea of space-based data centers has gained momentum as Earth’s increasing demand for electricity and cooling water strains existing infrastructure. Bezos noted, “Large training clusters will be better developed in space because of constant solar energy, unlike on Earth where weather and daylight vary.” He added, “We expect to render space-based data centers more cost-effective than those on the ground within a few decades.”
This shift toward space infrastructure is part of a broader effort to enhance life on Earth, building on existing satellite technology for weather forecasting and communications. Moving data centers to space introduces difficulties such as the complexity of maintenance, necessary upgrades, high launch expenses, and launch failure risks.
Bezos also drew parallels between the current AI surge and the dot-com bubble, warning of the hype’s transient nature but affirming the societal benefits of AI. “We should remain optimistic that AI’s advantages, much like the internet’s, are real and here to stay,” he said. He advised separating the potential for bubbles from reality, emphasizing that AI benefits are expected to spread widely across various sectors.
