For James Gunn, the path to Superman started in his childhood.
“As a kid, I was captivated by the essence of Superman,” Gunn shared in a behind-the-scenes feature for Superman. “It was a pivotal time when I began to grasp what movies truly were.”
Gunn first rose to fame as a dynamic writer-director in the superhero genre with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. After a brief dismissal from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he shifted to DC, directing 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Eventually, he wrapped up his Marvel tenure with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, Warner Bros. brought Gunn and producer Peter Safran on board as the new co-CEOs of DC Studios.
As a key architect of this revitalized universe, Gunn finally has the chance to explore iconic DC characters, including Batman, Wonder Woman, and especially Superman. At first, he questioned whether he was the right person to lead another film featuring the Man of Steel.
“James didn’t initially see Superman in his future. He was uncertain if that was the project for him,” said Safran in the new Superman feature. “Then one day he called and said, ‘I’ve found my angle. I know the story I want to tell.’”
Gunn’s version of Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, is centered on the theme of hope. Rachel Brosnahan, who plays the legendary Lois Lane, elaborates, “He [Superman] helps others simply because it’s the right thing to do.”
