A commuter train crashed on Tuesday after a retaining wall collapsed onto the tracks because of heavy rainfall near Barcelona, resulting in the death of the driver and injuries to four passengers, according to a fire department official. The incident came just two days after a deadly high-speed train collision and derailment near Adamuz in southern Cordoba, which claimed 42 lives.
Claudi Gallardo, an inspector with the Catalonia regional fire department, stated during a televised briefing from the crash site that 37 individuals were hurt, with four in serious condition, and the train operator had died. All passengers had been safely evacuated from the train.
Emergency response included dispatching 20 ambulances and 38 firefighting units to Gelida, a suburb on Barcelona’s outskirts, authorities reported. The derailment happened in an area known for chronically underfunded rail services and frequent incidents.
In another separate event on Tuesday night, rail traffic between Blanes and Maçanet-Massanes south of Girona—also part of the Barcelona commuter network—was halted due to a train axle that came off the track, according to Spanish rail operator Adif.
