Bangladeshi police prevented protesters from marching toward the Indian diplomatic mission in Rajshahi on December 18, 2025, as they attempted to gather outside the assistant Indian high commissioner’s office. The protests coincided with India’s foreign ministry stating it was reviewing Bangladesh’s extradition requests concerning Sheikh Hasina.
Demonstrators, including Miftahul Jannat, planned to hold a sit-in demanding the return of Sheikh Hasina and others accused of crimes. Authorities responded by halting their march, assuring they heard the demands and would forward them for consideration. A senior police officer in Rajshahi expressed hope that the situation would resolve peacefully and that no further protests were planned.
Earlier, on Wednesday, a group attempted to march toward the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. In response, India’s foreign ministry summoned Bangladesh’s top diplomat in New Delhi to express concerns about actions taken by “extremist elements.” The ministry also urged Bangladesh’s interim government under Muhammad Yunus to ensure the safety of diplomatic missions in accordance with diplomatic norms.
Sheikh Hasina, 78, was convicted in absentia last month for crimes against humanity by a Bangladesh court. Bangladesh is scheduled to hold national elections on February 12, with her old ruling party, the Awami League, barred from participating.
