Apple introduced the second-generation AirPods Max headphones at a price of $549, marking the first significant update since their initial release over five years ago. The revamp represents Apple’s first major overhaul of these over-ear headphones since their 2020 launch, as the company adds new features and enhances noise-canceling capabilities to better compete in the high-end headphone market.
Powered by Apple’s custom H2 chip, which also drives the latest AirPods lineup, the new model will be available for pre-order starting March 25 in over 30 countries. Retail sales are expected to commence early next month, according to Apple.
Notable upgrades in the AirPods Max 2 include improved active noise cancellation, a more advanced microphone system, and new features such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Live Translation. The latter, first rolled out on the AirPods Pro 3 in September, allows users to translate live conversations across different languages using Apple’s artificial intelligence platform, Apple Intelligence.
Additionally, the AirPods Max 2 support high-resolution lossless audio when connected via USB-C, targeting professional users and music creators who demand higher sound fidelity, Apple stated.
