The Apple Sports app is about to receive an exciting update that tennis enthusiasts are sure to love as Wimbledon approaches.
This iPhone app, which debuted quietly in February 2024, may not have received much attention, but it’s definitely worth downloading for fans who want to stay updated on live scores.
Apple asserts that it’s “as fast as a sports app can be,” providing real-time live scores on your lock screen through Live Activities. The app is ad-free and available for download at no cost, featuring match cards that deliver play-by-play updates, live scores, standings, fixtures, and betting odds.
One of the standout features is its ability to sync your favorite tournaments, leagues, and teams across other Apple apps, including Apple TV and Apple News. This integration ensures easy access to the latest live streams and news stories relevant to your interests.
What’s New in the Apple Sports App?
The major highlight of version 3.0 is the addition of tennis coverage, allowing users to track both men’s and women’s Grand Slam and 1000-level tournaments throughout the year. Wimbledon kicks off this thrilling experience.
Although qualification rounds won’t be covered, you’ll be able to follow all the finals matches starting June 30, complete with live match cards detailing who is serving and scores updated with each point, ensuring you catch every moment.
The updates also enhance Live Activities, which you can see on your iPhone’s lock screen and Apple Watch, offering a quick view of the current server, live scores, and game and set standings.
A Revamped Home Page and Baseball Enhancements
The update goes beyond tennis; Apple has revamped the Home page layout, allowing you to personalize the order in which your favorite tournaments and leagues are displayed.
To rearrange your followed leagues and tournaments, tap the menu icon and then “edit.” You can easily drag and drop the rows to your liking. Once you hit “done,” your home page will reflect these changes.
Any teams you’re following that are playing that day will aggregate at the top of your home page, even if they belong to different leagues and tournaments—a handy feature for tracking your favorites.
Baseball fans get a small but significant upgrade too: the names of the current pitcher and batter are now visible on their respective teams’ live scorecards.
Availability
Apple is making strides to enhance its Sports app with a straightforward and fast interface that stands out in the market. While it may not match the depth and features offered by competitors, its simplicity holds its own.
Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see what comes next following this tennis update and the refreshed home screen. Personally, I’d love to see cricket support and native functionality for iPad users, while many iPhone users worldwide are likely hoping for expansion to more countries.
This could be something for Apple to consider in the upcoming iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 releases this fall.
The version 3.0 update for the Apple Sports app is currently available for iPhone users in the US, Canada, and the UK via the app store.
