Apple CarPlay Ultra represents an advanced iteration of the tech giant’s smartphone integration system for automobiles, now rolling out in new models across the U.S. and Canada.
Currently, your choices are somewhat restricted to a single automaker: Aston Martin. To experience CarPlay Ultra firsthand, you’ll need to be prepared to spend!
This latest version offers enhanced integration and customization compared to the standard CarPlay. The traditional CarPlay takes over your car’s infotainment screen, allowing you to access a variety of supported apps like Phone, Messages, Maps, and numerous music streaming services.
However, it falls short by not accessing your vehicle’s controls or taking over the digital cluster display. CarPlay Ultra addresses these limitations directly.
Enhanced Features with CarPlay Ultra
With CarPlay Ultra, users get significantly more functionality at their fingertips. You can switch radio stations on your car’s built-in stereo, manage climate settings, and tweak performance configurations directly through the CarPlay Ultra interface. Additionally, users can command Siri to perform various functions within the car.
Control Over the Digital Cluster
This new system can take over the car’s entire digital cluster display. This means you can see essential app features like navigation on Maps, alongside traditional data such as speed, RPMs, and fuel range. Apple collaborated with Aston Martin to refine cluster display designs, offering various themes for drivers to select from.
Getting Started with CarPlay Ultra
To utilize CarPlay Ultra, you’ll need a compatible vehicle—currently, that means a new Aston Martin—and an iPhone 12 or later, equipped with iOS 18.5 or newer.
As of May 15, CarPlay Ultra is available in newly ordered Aston Martin models like the DBX, Vantage, DB12, and Vanquish in the U.S. and Canada. Existing Aston Martin owners with vehicles featuring the new infotainment system can look forward to a software update that brings CarPlay Ultra through local dealers. Aston Martin plans to expand this feature globally over the next year.
While those seeking affordable options may find it a stretch, other car manufacturers such as Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are actively exploring the inclusion of CarPlay Ultra in their models. Further insights may emerge next month at Apple’s WWDC 2025 conference.
