Vantara, an iconic initiative of the Ambani family in western Gujarat, is overseen by Anant Ambani, the billionaire’s son. According to their website, the organization has rescued and treated thousands of animals and boasts the largest elephant hospital in the world.
Last year, Vantara served as one of the venues for Anant’s pre-wedding celebrations, which drew international celebrities. Guests were advised to wear “jungle fever” themed outfits while visiting the animal rescue center.
On Monday night, the Supreme Court ordered an investigation into allegations involving Vantara, citing public interest litigations. The petitions, filed by wildlife and nonprofit groups, claimed animals were mistreated and questioned how the animals—especially elephants—were acquired. They also criticized the Central Zoo Authority for failing in its oversight duties.
In its written ruling, the court acknowledged that the accusations lacked direct proof but stated an independent investigation was necessary because authorities seemed reluctant to address the allegations. The court emphasized the need for a thorough, impartial assessment to ensure justice.
Vantara’s spokesperson told Reuters that the organization remains dedicated to transparency and complies with legal standards. They affirmed the organization’s ongoing commitment to animal rescue, rehab, and care, and expressed full cooperation with the inquiry.
The investigation will be headed by a former Supreme Court judge and is expected to review how animals, particularly elephants, were acquired, examine whether private collections or vanity collections were created, and verify compliance with India’s Wildlife Protection Act. The report is due by September 12.
Located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, Vantara houses over 150,000 animals representing more than 2,000 species. It also operates an elephant welfare trust sprawling across nearly 1,000 acres, which claims to be the world’s largest rescue facility for elephants. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vantara in March, praising it as a sanctuary that promotes ecological sustainability and wildlife conservation.
Anant Ambani also serves as an executive director at Reliance Industries, overseeing its technology and telecom divisions, including Jio Platforms.
