On October 23, a new Dialogue Assistant feature was introduced to Quark, a smart search engine owned by a major Chinese e-commerce company. This latest update aims to challenge Doubao, a prominent AI chatbot in China.
The Dialogue Assistant, powered by the cutting-edge Qwen3-Max model, the newest edition of the company’s large language model lineup, is capable of handling multi-turn conversations. It tailors responses based on personalized information that Quark has learned, according to information from its Hangzhou headquarters.
To maintain high standards in content accuracy and professionalism, the development team behind Quark has collaborated with the team responsible for the Qwen models, focusing specifically on enhancing search reasoning capabilities and ensuring trustworthy content generation.
Originally launched in 2016, Quark was developed based on a former acquisition of the UC Browser. Recently, the company announced plans to transform Quark into an all-in-one artificial intelligence application, aligning with its broader strategy to push AI-to-consumer services. This move appears to be an effort to strengthen its native AI app, Tongyi, which has lagged behind competitors in user engagement.
Recent data indicates that Doubao, supported by ByteDance, achieved over 157 million monthly active users on mobile devices in August, overtaking DeepSeek to become the leading AI app in China. Meanwhile, Tongyi’s user numbers have remained steady at around three million.
In comparison, Quark has amassed a large user base of approximately 150 million monthly active users, largely driven by its advanced smart search features. The company pointed out that the new Dialogue Assistant works in tandem with Quark’s search functions to reduce instances of AI hallucinations, enhancing overall reliability and user trust.
