Artificial intelligence has now found its way onto the cricket pitch, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has started employing AI technology for pitch analysis.
Ahead of the tenth match in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, former Indian captain Mithali Raj delivered the pitch report with the help of Google’s Gemini AI tool.
During the presentation, Mithali used the Gemini Live feature on her smartphone, pointing her camera at the pitch and asking the AI: “We’re here at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam for a one-day match. The weather is hot and humid — what’s your take on this pitch?”
Gemini replied that the pitch looked smooth and favorable for batters, with minimal grass cover. It added that the warm, humid weather would likely reduce ball swing, possibly leading to a high-scoring game.
Mithali concurred with the AI’s evaluation, stating it was indeed a good batting surface and predicting a run-heavy match.
This fixture is part of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 and features a game between India and South Africa.
