Afghan’s Taliban government announced the release of a detained American citizen on Sunday, following the liberation of an elderly British couple the week prior.
The foreign ministry identified the individual as Amir Amiri and stated he was handed over to Adam Boehler, Washington’s special envoy for hostage negotiations.
Boehler made a rare visit to Kabul earlier this month to discuss the potential for a prisoner exchange with the Taliban government.
“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has released an American citizen named Amir Amiri from custody today,” the Afghan defense ministry announced on social media.
“The Afghan government approaches citizen issues without political bias and affirms that diplomatic pathways are available to resolve such matters.”
Details about Amiri’s case remain limited, as it has not garnered widespread media coverage.
Meanwhile, Britons Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie, 76, were freed from a Kabul prison on September 20 after nearly eight months of detention.
Qatar played a mediating role in both releases, according to the Taliban administration.
