A perceived lack of transparency regarding the U.S. investigations into notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has created an unusual divide between President Donald Trump and his usually steadfast Republican supporters.
Amidst Trump’s struggle to address his supporters’ fixation with the case — one that has long been shrouded in conspiracy theories — AFP recaps the case’s background and the resulting uproar.
The Beginning of the Epstein Case
Jeffrey Epstein, a wealthy American financier, was first accused of sex offenses in 2006 after the parents of a 14-year-old girl reported that he had molested their daughter at his home in Florida.
He circumvented federal charges, which could have led to a life sentence, thanks to a controversial plea deal with prosecutors that resulted in him serving just under 13 months in jail.
In July 2019, Epstein was arrested again in New York, facing charges of trafficking dozens of teenage girls and engaging in sexual activities with them in exchange for money.
Prosecutors asserted that he collaborated with employees and associates to maintain a “steady supply of minor victims for exploitation.”
Epstein pleaded not guilty. On August 10, 2019, while awaiting trial in custody, he was found dead in his prison cell, with authorities indicating it was a suicide by hanging.
Separately, Epstein’s accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, was sentenced to prison in 2022 for aiding in his abuse of girls. Her case revealed Epstein’s connections to high-profile individuals, including Britain’s Prince Andrew and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, both of whom have denied any wrongdoing.
Why Conspiracy Theories Flourish
Some theorize that authorities are hiding details about the Epstein case to shield wealthy and influential figures linked to him, including Trump.
These suspicions have taken hold within Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement, though calls for greater transparency have emerged from across the political spectrum.
A significant theory revolves around a rumored list of individuals who, along with Epstein, committed sexual offenses. The Trump administration has maintained that no such list exists.
Critics also point to suspicious circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death, such as alleged malfunctions of security cameras in his cell on the night of his passing, which have intensified speculation.
Trump’s Involvement in the Epstein Case
Trump, who socialized with Epstein during his time as a New York real estate mogul, remarked while campaigning for president that he would “probably” release documents connected to the case.
However, since assuming office, many of Trump’s followers have expressed disappointment over what they perceive as a lack of action.
The 79-year-old himself became entangled in the conspiracy theories when his former advisor, Elon Musk, suggested in a now-deleted post that Trump was “in the Epstein files.”
The Trump administration’s attempts to satisfy demands for a complete disclosure of the so-called “Epstein files” have mostly fallen short.
A batch of documents released in February, which promised to clarify aspects of the Epstein case, offered little new information.
Additionally, an almost 11-hour video released this month aimed at dispelling conspiracy theories about Epstein’s potential murder was met with skepticism, as it appeared to lack a minute of crucial footage from the relevant night.
Furthermore, a memo from the Justice Department and FBI last week indicating that the Epstein files contained no evidence warranting further investigation prompted calls for resignations from leadership in both agencies.
What’s Next?
Trump is walking a fine line, stating that he supports the release of any “credible” documents related to Epstein while dismissing the case as “pretty boring stuff.”
Yet, even the typically assertive president seems unable to quell the unrest, as critics and even key allies demand more transparency.
Mike Johnson, the Republican House Speaker, has not aligned with Trump on this matter, instead calling on the Justice Department to publicly disclose any documents connected to Epstein.
Meanwhile, Democrats are taking advantage of the rift between Trump and his party, urging his administration to release the complete evidence collected by prosecutors in the Epstein case.
