North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed his country’s willingness to provide “unconditional support” for all actions taken by Russia regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as reported by state media on Sunday. This announcement came during high-level strategic discussions between North Korea and Russia.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is currently in North Korea for a three-day visit. During this time, he has received military support from North Korea, including troops and weaponry, as Moscow seeks to strengthen its position in the war.
Kim and Lavrov met in Wonsan, a coastal city in eastern North Korea, where they conducted their second round of strategic talks. They reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering cooperation in line with a partnership agreement signed the previous year, which outlines mutual defense protocols.
According to North Korea’s state news agency, KCNA, Kim stated that their collaborative efforts in response to rapidly changing global geopolitics would significantly enhance global peace and security. He reiterated that North Korea is prepared to fully back the Russian government in its efforts to address the fundamental issues surrounding the Ukrainian crisis.
Prior to his meeting with Kim, Lavrov engaged in talks with his North Korean counterpart, Choe Son Hui. Following their discussions, they jointly vowed to support each other’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to KCNA.
Russian media reported that Lavrov characterized the relationship between the two nations as a “formidable fighting brotherhood” and expressed gratitude for the troops sent to Russia.
The relationship between Russia and North Korea has intensified significantly over the last two years since the beginning of the Ukraine war in February 2022. North Korea has dispatched over 10,000 troops and military supplies to assist Russia in its military endeavors.
In addition, Kim’s administration has committed to sending approximately 6,000 military engineers and construction workers to aid in rebuilding efforts in the Russian Kursk region.
