WhatsApp is introducing a refreshed typing indicator that reveals how many members are currently composing messages in group chats. This allows users to gain a more immediate understanding of group dynamics.
This new feature is currently being tested by some beta users in the latest Android update, version 2.25.20.17, available on the Google Play Store, according to WABetaInfo.
In the past, when multiple users were typing simultaneously in a group chat, WhatsApp would only show the name of one participant in the chat list. This made it difficult for users to gauge how many others were engaged in the conversation without opening the chat.
Now, WhatsApp has revamped this functionality, replacing the single name with a new typing indicator that appears in the chat list.

This minor update introduces an animated message indicating how many participants are typing, such as “2 people typing.”
This feature enhances communication transparency, allowing users to see what’s happening in the group without needing to enter the chat. It’s especially useful in bustling groups where several individuals may be drafting responses at the same time.
However, it’s crucial to note that this improved visibility only applies to typing activities. If several users are sending voice messages simultaneously, WhatsApp will continue to show just one participant’s name in the chat list, as it did before.
The indication that multiple people are typing suggests that more messages are on the way. This insight can assist users in deciding whether to check the chat right away or revisit it later.
This enhanced visibility may also inform users when a group is particularly lively, possibly reacting to significant events. For those who are occupied, it can serve as a clear cue to hold off on opening the chat, knowing that discussions are still ongoing.
The rollout of this feature is expected to reach even more users in the upcoming weeks.
