KUALA LUMPUR: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday during the ASEAN foreign ministers’ gathering in Malaysia, according to the State Department.
This meeting occurs amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Beijing, which have clashed over a variety of issues, including trade, fentanyl, Taiwan, and advanced technology.
Rubio and Wang are attending the ASEAN conference along with foreign ministers from Japan, South Korea, and Australia.
Since President Donald Trump took office in January, hostilities between the U.S. and China have intensified significantly, marked by a trade war that has led to soaring tariffs on each country’s exports. The U.S. at one point imposed additional tariffs of up to 145 percent on Chinese goods, prompting China to retaliate with counter-tariffs reaching 125 percent on American products.
In May, both nations reached an agreement in Geneva to temporarily reduce these steep tariffs, an outcome that Trump characterized as a “total reset.”
