President Donald Trump deemed Elon Musk’s initiative to launch a new political party as “absurd,” emphasizing that Musk might enjoy his venture but asserting that the best functioning of the United States relies on its established two-party system.
Following Musk’s announcement about the formation of a new political party during his continued feud with Trump, the Republican president addressed reporters before boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, after a visit to his nearby golf course.
“I think it’s absurd to start a third party. We’ve achieved remarkable success with the Republican Party. The Democrats appear to be lost, but we have always operated under a two-party system. Initiating a third party only adds more confusion,” Trump remarked to reporters.
“The structure of our political system seems to have been designed for just two parties. Third parties have never succeeded, so he can have fun with it, but I find it ridiculous,” he added.
Musk revealed on Saturday his plans to form the “America Party” in retaliation to Trump’s tax cuts and spending policies, which Musk claimed could lead to national bankruptcy.
In reaction, Azoria Partners, an investment firm that intended to create a fund connected to Musk’s electric vehicle company, Tesla, announced it would be postponing the plan due to “a conflict with his full-time responsibilities as CEO.”
Having initially been a close advisor to Trump on government downsizing and reform during the early days of his presidency, Musk stated that his new party aims to challenge Republican lawmakers in the upcoming midterm elections who supported the extensive legislation known as the “big, beautiful bill.”
