DHARAMSHALA: The Dalai Lama, the revered spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, marked his 90th birthday this past Sunday with a series of celebrations organized by his devoted followers.
Throughout the festivities, he boldly expressed his intentions to live well past the age of 130 and reaffirmed his commitment to returning through reincarnation after his passing.
As a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the Dalai Lama is recognized as one of the most influential religious figures globally, commanding a following that extends beyond the boundaries of Buddhism. In contrast, the Chinese government regards him as a separatist and has worked to assert control over Tibetan Buddhism.
After fleeing Tibet in 1959 due to a failed uprising against Chinese rule, the 14th Dalai Lama, along with countless other Tibetans, sought refuge in India. Since then, he has advocated for a nonviolent “Middle Way” approach aimed at securing autonomy and religious freedom for the Tibetan people.
This year, thousands of admirers from around the world, including prominent figures from the U.S. and India, were anticipated to gather in Dharamshala, the small Indian town nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas where the Dalai Lama resides, for the birthday celebrations.
The event featured cultural performances and speeches from notable attendees, including longtime follower Richard Gere and various Indian government officials. The Dalai Lama himself was slated to address the attendees.
The prior week of festivities held particular significance for Tibetan Buddhists, as the Dalai Lama had indicated he would discuss succession on this milestone birthday. On Wednesday, he alleviated concerns by stating he would be reincarnated as the leader of the faith and that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, his non-profit foundation, is the sole authority responsible for recognizing his successor.
Despite this, the Chinese government has insisted that any succession must receive approval from its authorities.
In the backdrop of ongoing efforts to counter China’s expanding influence, the United States has urged Beijing to cease its interference in the succession of the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan Buddhist leaders.
