Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla and owner of X, announced the creation of a new political party, dubbed the “America Party,” following a social media poll that suggested a significant interest among his followers for such an initiative. On Saturday, he shared in a post, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and here it is!”
Musk emphasized that this new party aims to “restore your freedom.” His announcement comes on the heels of former President Donald Trump signing a contentious tax-cut and spending legislation into law, which Musk has publicly criticized.
Despite being a substantial financial supporter of Trump’s re-election campaign and previously leading an initiative focused on government spending cuts in the Trump administration, Musk’s relationship with the former president appears to have soured due to differing views on the recent legislation. Earlier in the week, Trump hinted at the possibility of reducing the federal subsidies that Musk’s companies currently receive.
Musk had previously mentioned his intention to form a new political party and invest in campaigns to challenge lawmakers who endorsed the bill. This ongoing tension between Musk and Trump has raised eyebrows among Republicans, who worry that it could jeopardize their majority in the upcoming 2026 midterm congressional elections.
