Two individuals lost their lives after firefighters responding to a fire were ambushed by an unknown number of shooters during a standoff in Idaho’s northwestern region on Sunday, according to the local sheriff.
It remains uncertain whether there was a single shooter or multiple assailants, Sheriff Bob Norris stated during a press briefing. He also mentioned that civilians may have been hit in the developing situation at a natural area in Coeur d’Alene.
“We are ready to neutralize the suspect, who is actively firing at public safety personnel,” Norris remarked.
Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, has been informed about the incident in Idaho, as reported by ABC News.
Firefighters received the initial report of a fire at approximately 1:21 PM local time, Norris said, and about 40 minutes later, calls came in regarding gunfire aimed at them.
“This is a vicious attack on our dedicated firefighters,” stated Idaho Governor Brad Little on X. “I encourage all Idaho residents to pray for them and their families as we await further information.”
Further details regarding potential casualties or the sequence of events have not been disclosed by Governor Little.
“As this situation continues to evolve, we urge the public to stay clear of the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to perform their duties safely,” Little added.
