British Prime Minister Keir Starmer Announces Inquiry into Grooming Gangs
On Saturday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his agreement to launch a national inquiry into grooming gangs implicated in the sexual abuse of thousands of girls. This marks a shift from his earlier reluctance to consider a statutory review.
The issue, which has highlighted the troubling history of gangs grooming, trafficking, and raping young white girls over a decade ago, gained renewed attention this year after criticism from U.S. billionaire Elon Musk aimed at the British government.
In January, Interior Minister Yvette Cooper tasked Louise Casey, a former senior official, with conducting a "rapid audit" to assess the extent and nature of gang-related exploitation in the UK.
Reports suggest that Casey’s findings will conclude that vulnerable white British girls were "institutionally ignored" by law enforcement and local agencies, primarily due to a reluctance to be labeled as racist, according to Sky News.
“Casey initially believed there was no real need for a national inquiry beyond her audit’s work,” Starmer informed reporters while heading to the G7 summit in Canada. “However, based on her observations, she now believes there should be a national inquiry. I have carefully reviewed her report and I will fully endorse her recommendation,” he stated.
In response, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch criticized Starmer, implying that he needed guidance to arrive at what she viewed as the right decision. “I have been advocating for a comprehensive national inquiry since January,” she remarked. “Many survivors of these grooming gangs will likely feel relieved that action is finally occurring, but they deserve timely resolutions, not ones drawn out for the next decade."
