WASHINGTON: A press conference turned chaotic on Thursday when U.S. Senator Alex Padilla was handcuffed by security after trying to ask a question.

During the event in Los Angeles, where Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was addressing ongoing immigration protests, Padilla attempted to interject.

“I am Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the Secretary,” he said during Noem’s remarks about the protests against President Trump’s immigration policies.

“Hands off,” Padilla, age 52, asserted before being forcibly removed from the venue.

In a statement, Padilla reported that he was taken to the ground and handcuffed by security personnel.

A video circulating online showed three agents pinning Padilla to the ground and securing his wrists with cuffs. As of now, Reuters has not confirmed the video’s authenticity.

Noem’s address occurred amidst several days of protests in Los Angeles regarding Trump’s strict immigration enforcement. In response, the White House deployed National Guard troops and Marines to the city to secure federal buildings and assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accused Padilla on X of participating in “disrespectful political theater.”

“Mr. Padilla was repeatedly instructed to step back but did not heed officers’ commands. The Secret Service mistook him for a potential assailant, leading to the appropriate response,” the department stated, noting that Noem later met with Padilla.

Numerous Democratic senators, along with at least one Republican, criticized the handling of Padilla’s situation.

“Senator Padilla is a tall individual, and the way he was treated during that incident is both wrong and disturbing,” remarked Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski to reporters on Capitol Hill.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed his outrage during a speech on the Senate floor, saying, “What I just witnessed was appalling — the rough treatment of a U.S. senator. We need immediate clarification on what transpired.”

Senate Republican Leader John Thune indicated he would wait for more information before forming an opinion, stating, “We will respond, but I want to ascertain the facts first.”

This incident isn’t the first time Trump administration officials have detained elected Democrats. For example, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested for trespassing at a privately operated immigration facility on May 9. Although the charges against him were eventually dropped, Democratic U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver faced charges for allegedly assaulting officers during Baraka’s arrest.

Both individuals have denied any wrongdoing.
