In a devastating turn of events, Air India flight 171, bound for London, tragically crashed near Ahmedabad with 242 individuals on board, as confirmed by aviation authorities in New Delhi on Thursday.

The aircraft went down shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, according to reports from India Today. The plane issued a mayday call soon after departure but lost contact with air traffic control and crashed in the Meghaninagar area, just outside the airport perimeter.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown, and all flight operations at the airport have been suspended in the aftermath. Dramatic visuals from the scene captured thick black smoke billowing upward, prompting the rapid deployment of seven fire engines to manage the blaze.

Tragically, local media outlet Indian Express reported that all 242 people aboard the flight lost their lives. Over 100 bodies have already been transported to a hospital in Ahmedabad, as confirmed by local police this afternoon.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences, labeling the incident "heartbreaking" and noted he has been in contact with various ministers and local authorities in Ahmedabad. "This tragedy has left us in shock and sadness. My heart goes out to everyone affected. I am in touch with officials assisting those impacted," he said.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the crash scenes as "devastating," extending his thoughts to the passengers and their families. He commented, "Seeing a London-bound flight with many British citizens crash in Ahmedabad is truly tragic."

Foreign Minister David Lammy took to social media, sharing his sorrow regarding the accident. "I am deeply saddened by the news of this horrific plane crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts are with all those impacted. The UK is collaborating with local Indian authorities to urgently ascertain the facts and extend support."

Buckingham Palace also mentioned that King Charles III is being kept apprised of the situation. Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch characterized the news as "heartbreaking," resonating with the widespread grief over the tragic incident.
