On Thursday, an Air India flight carrying over 200 passengers crashed near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, a city in western India. Officials from the airline and the police reported this incident, but did not provide any details about potential casualties.
The aircraft was en route to London’s Gatwick Airport, as stated by Air India. According to police reports, the crash took place in a populated area near the airport.
“We are currently gathering more information and will provide updates soon,” Air India announced on X (formerly Twitter).
Television broadcasts indicated that the incident occurred during the takeoff of the aircraft. Footage depicted burning debris, with dark smoke billowing into the sky near the airport.
According to the news agency ANI, there were 242 individuals aboard the flight, based on information from the police control center in Gujarat. However, CNN News18 reported that there were 220 passengers along with 12 crew members on the plane.
