SEOUL: A brand new Boeing 737 MAX arrived back in China on Monday, according to flight tracking data, signaling that the American aircraft manufacturer is resuming deliveries to Chinese clients as trade tensions between Beijing and Washington begin to cool.

Boeing had frozen deliveries of new aircraft to China in April amid escalating tariffs between the two largest economies in the world. However, the company announced at the end of May that deliveries would restart in June after a temporary 90-day reduction of those tariffs.

The aircraft, adorned with Xiamen Airlines’ colors, touched down at Boeing’s Zhoushan facility near Shanghai after departing from Seattle on Saturday, making refueling stops in Hawaii and Guam along the way.

Tracking data shows that Boeing initially transported the plane to Zhoushan in March, but it returned to the U.S. in mid-April when Chinese airlines ceased accepting new Boeing deliveries.

Neither Boeing, Xiamen Airlines, nor the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) responded immediately to requests for comments.

China accounts for approximately 10% of Boeing’s commercial aircraft backlog and constitutes a crucial and expanding market for aviation.

On Monday, representatives from both the U.S. and China will meet in London to discuss potential trade agreements.

In April, Boeing repatriated at least three 737 MAX jets to the U.S. from Zhoushan, where they were undergoing final preparations for delivery to Chinese airlines; the first of these jets was the one that landed on Monday.

Boeing had previously noted that its Chinese customers were unable to accept new aircraft because of the tariffs and considered reselling a number of these planes. However, the company opted not to send these aircraft to other markets despite desires to reduce its inventory.

Chinese authorities have not disclosed specifics as to why Boeing’s deliveries halted, but they indicated that both Chinese airlines and Boeing have faced severe impacts due to tariffs imposed by the U.S.

In April, Boeing indicated that it had planned to deliver 50 jets to Chinese airlines in the remainder of the year, with 41 already under production or completed.
