SAN FRANCISCO: Microsoft has announced its first handheld gaming devices under the Xbox brand, promoting them as a way for gamers to enjoy their extensive library anywhere they go.
Two models of the “ROG Xbox Ally,” created in collaboration with ASUS from Taiwan, will be released in time for the holiday season, according to Xbox president Sarah Bond during an online event that highlighted new games coming to the platform.
“The Xbox Ally is essentially a portable Xbox, merging the power of the Xbox ecosystem with the flexibility of Windows,” Bond said.
“With this device, you can access your entire game collection, including titles from various Windows PC platforms such as Xbox, Battle.net, Steam, GOG, and Ubisoft Connect.”
This announcement about the Xbox Ally comes just days after the launch of Nintendo’s Switch 2, which is anticipated to achieve remarkable early sales for the well-known Japanese game maker, famous for games like “Super Mario.”
Nintendo’s new console boasts a larger display and enhanced processing capabilities, representing an upgrade from the original Switch, which became a worldwide sensation with favorites like “Animal Crossing.”
Microsoft plans to reveal pricing and release details for the Xbox Ally in the upcoming months.
The handheld devices closely resemble Microsoft’s console controllers in terms of buttons and grips but have been elongated to accommodate larger screens.
“When you power up your Xbox Ally, it will boot directly into a full-screen Xbox experience designed specifically for handheld gaming,” stated Microsoft in a release.
“The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are ideal for gamers who want a versatile gaming option while traveling—whether you’re at the airport or lounging at home.”
