After experiencing two unsuccessful launches earlier this year, SpaceX is optimistic about its next Starship flight and has set a target launch date.
The launch, dubbed Starship Flight 9, is scheduled to take off from SpaceX’s Starbase in South Texas at 7:30 PM EDT (11:30 PM GMT) on Tuesday, May 27, according to Space.com.
This will be the first attempt to recycle the massive Super Heavy booster, the first stage of the Starship system, and it marks the ninth test flight of the rocket itself.
This new flight follows two earlier attempts this year—Flight 7 in January and Flight 8 in March. During both previous launches, SpaceX utilized impressive robotic catchers to bring the Super Heavy booster back safely after launch, but the rocket’s Ship stage failed shortly after taking off.
As of now, SpaceX intends to initiate Flight 9 on May 27 at 7:30 PM EDT (11:30 PM GMT). However, the exact timing could vary depending on vehicle readiness.
For local time in Texas, the launch is set for 6:30 PM. Although SpaceX hasn’t specified an exact timeframe for the flight window, the company has historically used 30-minute launch periods, meaning the launch could occur anytime between 7:30 PM and 8 PM EDT (11:30 PM and midnight GMT).
Local authorities in the area surrounding SpaceX’s Starbase have announced planned road closures through May 29, suggesting that the launch might be rescheduled to backup days of May 28 and 29, should the need arise.
