Pope Leo XIV Proposes Peace Talks Between Russia and Ukraine at the Vatican
ROME: Pope Leo XIV has extended an invitation to mediate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine at the Vatican.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed the Pope’s willingness to assist in facilitating discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict after a conversation with him. She expressed that the Pope is eager to bring both parties together and work towards a peaceful resolution to the war.
Meloni reached out to the Pope following a phone call on Monday between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to her office. After the call, President Trump engaged with several European leaders, including Meloni, where he underscored the Pope’s readiness to host the talks.
On Tuesday, Meloni had a discussion with the Pope, where he reiterated his commitment to holding upcoming negotiations at the Vatican. She expressed her gratitude to the Pope for his steadfast dedication to peace.
That same day, Meloni also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and various other international leaders to ensure continued coordination in pursuit of peace talks.
Despite recent initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict that has persisted since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, there have been no significant breakthroughs, and Putin has dismissed Kyiv’s proposals for a ceasefire.
Last week, Pope Leo XIV offered the Vatican as a platform for mediation during a meeting with representatives of Eastern Christian Churches.
