US law enforcement has apprehended a former member of the Michigan Army National Guard following his alleged attempt to carry out a mass shooting at a military base in Warren, Michigan.

The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Ammar Abdulmajid-Mohamed Said, reportedly aimed to execute this attack on behalf of Daesh, also known as the Islamic State (ISIS).

According to the Justice Department (DoJ), Said has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and distributing information related to a destructive device.

Sue J. Bai, head of the Justice Department’s National Security Division, stated, “This defendant is charged with plotting a lethal attack on a U.S. military installation. Thanks to the relentless work of law enforcement, we prevented this attack before it could claim lives. We are committed to bringing the full power of the Department to prosecute those who threaten our military personnel and the safety of all Americans.”

US Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. for the Eastern District of Michigan added, “ISIS is a vicious terrorist group that seeks to harm Americans. Assisting ISIS or any terrorist organization in preparing or executing violent acts constitutes not only a heinous crime but also a threat to our entire nation and way of life. Our office will not tolerate such actions, and we will utilize the law’s full force against anyone engaged in terrorism.”

FBI Counterterrorism Division Assistant Director Donald M. Holstead stated, “The defendant allegedly attempted to orchestrate an attack on a military facility in support of ISIS, which was thwarted through the diligence of the FBI and our partners. The FBI remains dedicated to identifying and stopping terrorist plans targeting the American homeland and U.S. interests abroad.”

Brigadier General Rhett R. Cox, commanding general of Army Counterintelligence Command, remarked, “The arrest of this former soldier underscores the critical nature of our counterintelligence initiatives to detect and disrupt individuals who threaten our country. I commend our special agents and FBI partners for their exhaustive efforts in investigating and apprehending this suspect. We will continue to collaborate with our partners to avert similar incidents in the future. We urge all service members to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to their superiors, as the safety of our Army and nation relies on our collective vigilance against insider threats.”

Court documents reveal that Said disclosed his plan to two undercover law enforcement officers, detailing his intention to execute a mass shooting at the U.S. Army’s Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) facility at the Detroit Arsenal in Warren, Michigan.

In April 2025, the undercover officers indicated their willingness to carry out Said’s plan under Daesh’s direction. In response, Said offered material assistance, which included providing armor-piercing ammunition, assisting in operational reconnaissance by flying his drone over TACOM, and training the officers in firearm use and the crafting of Molotov cocktails. He meticulously planned various aspects of the attack, including entry points and target buildings.

On May 13, the day the attack was supposed to unfold, Said was arrested after he approached TACOM and launched his drone in support of his plan. He is scheduled for his initial court appearance later today in the Eastern District of Michigan.

The US Attorney’s Office will request that Said be held in pretrial detention due to the danger he poses to the community and the risk of flight.

If convicted on the current charges, Said could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for each count.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force continues to investigate this case. While Said has been charged with attempting to attack a military facility, the Department of Justice stresses that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
