The White House is currently in discussions with members of Qatar’s royal family about the potential acquisition of a luxury jumbo jet to serve as Air Force One, according to a report from BBC News.
Although Qatar clarified that the aircraft would not be a monetary gift, it has confirmed that negotiations for a temporary arrangement are ongoing between the two governments.
CBS News, which collaborates with BBC in the United States, suggests that the aircraft might eventually be donated to Donald Trump’s presidential library following the conclusion of his term. This news comes ahead of Trump’s forthcoming visit to Qatar, marking his first significant foreign trip during his second term.
Ali Al-Ansari, Qatar’s Media Attaché to the US, announced that the talks are occurring between Qatar’s Ministry of Defence and the US Department of Defense. He indicated that the issue is still undergoing legal examination, and no definitive agreement has been reached yet.
The aircraft under consideration is reportedly a Boeing 747-8, known for being a “flying palace.” However, it will require modifications and a security clearance prior to being deemed suitable for presidential use.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed concerns by affirming that any foreign gift or temporary utilization of foreign property would adhere to US legal and transparency standards. Nevertheless, critics are expressing legal and ethical apprehensions regarding the aircraft’s value and the implications of accepting such a lavish item.
The current fleet of Air Force One consists of two specially modified Boeing 747-200B jets that have been in service since the early 1990s. Although Boeing has been contracted to manufacture replacements—two custom-built 747-8 aircraft—the timeline has reportedly been delayed, with delivery anticipated around 2027 or 2028.
Trump has publicly criticized Boeing for these delays and hinted earlier this year that his administration might consider acquiring an alternative plane.
During his first term, Trump maintained strong diplomatic relations with Qatar, which included significant aircraft purchase agreements and a robust defense collaboration.
Qatar has previously bestowed jets to allies, including a luxury aircraft to Turkey in 2018.
