On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Iran must cease its uranium enrichment and long-range missile development, while also allowing American inspectors access to its facilities. This announcement coincided with the postponement of a new round of nuclear talks.

Rubio’s remarks highlight the significant ongoing disagreements in the negotiations aimed at settling the protracted conflict regarding Iran’s nuclear activities. U.S. President Donald Trump previously warned of the possibility of military action against Iran if no agreement is reached.

“They need to stop supporting terrorism, assist the Houthis in Yemen, develop long-range missiles that essentially exist for nuclear capabilities, and abandon uranium enrichment,” Rubio expressed in a Fox News interview.

Iran has consistently maintained that it will not forfeit its missile program or uranium enrichment efforts—a process essential for generating energy but also capable of producing materials for nuclear weapons.

On the same day, a senior Iranian official informed Reuters that the fourth round of talks set to occur in Rome this Saturday has been postponed, with a new date dependent on the approach of the U.S.

Rubio emphasized that Iran should import enriched uranium for its nuclear energy needs rather than producing it domestically. “If they can enrich uranium to 3.67%, it only requires a few weeks to escalate to 20%, then 60%, and eventually reach the 80% and 90% required for weaponization,” he warned.

Iran asserted its right to enrich uranium under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, denying any intentions to develop nuclear weapons.

Furthermore, Rubio insisted that any agreement would need to include American involvement in the inspection process, allowing inspectors access to all facilities, including military installations.
