Pope Francis has passed away due to complications from a stroke that resulted in a coma and irreversible heart failure, as indicated in a death certificate issued by the Vatican on Monday, according to AFP.
The 88-year-old papal leader died at 7:35 AM local time in his apartment at the Santa Marta residence.
Just weeks prior to his death, Francis had been discharged from a five-week hospitalization where he struggled with double pneumonia. The death certificate lists “cerebral stroke, coma, irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse” as the official causes of death.
Further details from the Vatican document, signed by Professor Andrea Arcangeli, the head of health for Vatican City, revealed additional health issues that had not been previously disclosed.
In addition to pneumonia, the pope had been dealing with arterial hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and chronic bronchiectasis, which affects the airways.
In recent months, concerns had grown about his declining health, particularly due to his respiratory problems. The extent of his underlying health conditions had not been made public prior to his passing.
