Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently discussed her absence from political gatherings and addressed speculation about her marriage during a podcast episode released on Tuesday.
On the “Work in Progress” podcast hosted by actress Sophia Bush, Obama talked about her newfound ability to dictate her own schedule and make personal choices, according to a report by CNN.
“I had the opportunity to make many of these choices in the past, but I didn’t allow myself that freedom,” Michelle explained, adding, “Even though I encouraged my children to pursue their own paths, I often used them as a reason for not pursuing my own interests.”
She elaborated, “That restriction is no longer there. This year, when I reviewed my calendar, I realized I needed to prioritize my own needs over obligations—without disclosing any specifics, I opted for what felt right for me instead of what I felt I had to do.”
Additionally, Michelle notably missed President Donald Trump’s second inauguration and the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter earlier this January.
She went on to discuss the feelings of guilt associated with declining requests and how her decisions to scale back on responsibilities sparked rumors concerning a potential divorce from her husband, former President Barack Obama.
“I still manage to carve out time for speeches, engage in community activities, and work on initiatives I am passionate about, like girls’ education. We’re set to open our library a year from now, and I have selective involvement in that project,” she shared.
She added, “Women often face a unique challenge in dealing with the fear of disappointing others. This year, it shocked many when I made a personal decision; they felt compelled to assume that it signaled a divorce from my husband.”
