At least 20 individuals lost their lives in a fire at a nursing home located in northern China, as reported by the Chinese news agency Xinhua on Wednesday, which did not elaborate further on the incident.
The blaze started around 9 PM on Tuesday at the nursing home in Longhua County, approximately 180 kilometers northeast of Beijing, according to Xinhua.
By 3 AM on Wednesday, the agency confirmed that 20 people had died.
“Some other elderly residents from the nursing home have been moved to nearby hospitals for monitoring and treatment,” the report stated.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
Tragic fires are not uncommon in China, often attributed to insufficient building regulations and poor safety practices in workplaces.
Earlier this year, a fire at a vegetable market in Zhangjiakou, located northwest of Beijing, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and injured 15 others.
A month prior, nine lives were lost at a construction site in Rongcheng city in eastern China when another fire broke out.
