Tragedy struck in the early hours of Tuesday when the roof of a nightclub in the Dominican capital, Santo Domingo, caved in, resulting in the deaths of at least 27 individuals, including a provincial governor, and injuring 134 others, authorities reported.
Rescue teams are currently on-site, working to free those who may still be trapped beneath the debris. Juan Manuel Mendez, head of the Dominican Republic’s emergency operations center, stated that he did not have an estimate of how many patrons were inside the Jet Set nightclub at the time of the incident.
President Luis Abinader confirmed that among the fatalities was Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the northern Monte Cristi province.
“We are profoundly saddened by this tragedy,” he posted on X, highlighting that officials are diligently working to locate the victims. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected.”
