BEIJING: China has denounced the proposed new tariffs from the U.S. as a significant misstep, threatening to respond with strong measures if Washington proceeds with the plan to impose 50% tariffs.

The spokesperson for the ministry stated, “The U.S. threat to increase tariffs against China is a compounded error that once again highlights its coercive tactics.”

“China will not accept such actions,” they emphasized.

“Should the U.S. continue down this path, China will stand firm,” the spokesperson warned.

“If the U.S. heightens its tariff actions, China will certainly implement countermeasures to protect its own rights and interests,” they added.

Last week, Trump disrupted the global economy with sweeping tariffs, sparking fears of an impending worldwide recession and attracting backlash, even from members of his own Republican party.

As the trade conflict intensifies, Beijing—viewed as Washington’s primary economic competitor—has announced its own 34% tariffs on American products, set to take effect on Thursday.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce reiterated on Tuesday its desire for “dialogue” with the United States, underscoring that “there are no victors in a trade war.”
