Mandalay Earthquake: Woman Rescued After 30 Hours in Rubble
Mandalay, Myanmar: A woman has been successfully rescued from the debris of a collapsed apartment building in Mandalay, more than 30 hours after a devastating earthquake struck the region, leaving many feared trapped underneath the rubble.
Rescue teams cheered as Phyu Lay Khaing, 30, was carefully brought out of the Sky Villa Condominium on a stretcher. Her husband, Ye Aung, anxiously awaited her emergence and embraced her as she was lifted down.
"Initially, I didn’t believe she would survive," Ye Aung shared with AFP as he watched for news of his wife. "I’m overjoyed to receive such good news." The couple has two sons, eight-year-old William and five-year-old Ethan.
As the ambulance departed for the hospital, Ye Aung was seen gripping his wife’s hand tightly through the vehicle’s window.
A representative from the Red Cross previously indicated that over 90 individuals might still be trapped within the collapsed structure.
The earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, struck northwest of Mandalay on Friday afternoon, quickly followed by a 6.7 aftershock. The tremors resulted in extensive damage, toppling buildings, destroying bridges, and buckling roads across large parts of Myanmar, particularly in Mandalay, which is the country’s second-largest city with a population of over 1.7 million.
