WhatsApp is developing an exciting new feature that will enable users to share motion photos in chats, groups, and channels, which will be available in a future update.

The well-known instant messaging app owned by Meta announced this feature in its latest WhatsApp beta for Android update 2.25.8.12, which can be found on the Google Play Store, as reported by WABetaInfo.

Motion photos consist of a media format that captures a brief moment of action before and after a picture is taken. Unlike standard images, motion photos include a short video and audio, creating an engaging way to preserve memories.

This feature is especially favored on certain mobile devices, as it merges photos and videos by adding a hint of animation to images.

Motion photos are typically stored in specialized formats combining still images with short video clips, enabling users to revisit moments with a single tap, further enhancing the app’s media-sharing options.

When accessing the gallery, users can expect to see a new button dedicated to motion photos. This button will allow users to choose between sending a traditional image or the motion photo version, if available, providing more flexibility based on the situation.

Even though the motion photo-sharing feature is still under development, it is anticipated to work seamlessly in individual and group chats, as well as channels.

Moreover, recipients will automatically view the motion photo in its animated form, regardless of whether their device supports the feature. For iOS users, these motion photos are likely to display as Live Photos.
