The Spirit of Ramadan in Dubai: Non-Muslim Volunteers Foster Community

DUBAI: In Dubai, the distribution of Iftar meals is breaking down barriers of race, religion, and nationality. This warm spirit of generosity has led to a significant trend, with numerous non-Muslims converting to Islam each year.

Sheikh Muhammad Aziz, an expatriate from Malawi, shared insights during an interview with Geo News. Sheikh Aziz and his dedicated team distribute 33,000 Iftar packages daily across 13 different locations in Dubai.

"During our Iftar distributions, we don’t inquire about anyone’s religion or nationality. Everyone is regarded as a ‘guest of Allah’, and we provide meals without any form of discrimination," stated Sheikh Aziz.

He highlighted the spirit of kindness in Islam, noting that more than 10 non-Muslims tend to embrace Islam every Ramadan as a result of these charitable acts.

Sheikh Aziz and his brother, Imran Aziz, embarked on their mission to assist the less fortunate and laborers back in 2015. Their initiatives have since evolved into a sizable Ramadan campaign known as "Happy Happy Ramadan."

This campaign spans various areas of Dubai, including Barsha, the Dubai Industrial Area, and Sonapur. It attracts hundreds of volunteers from diverse backgrounds, including many non-Muslims from Europe and the UK, who enthusiastically participate in the meal distribution.

Jemma, a volunteer hailing from the UK, expressed her delight in being part of the initiative: "Handing out Iftar meals is such a fulfilling experience. My kids join in too, and it teaches them empathy and kindness."

There’s a significant involvement of Pakistani volunteers in the program as well. Rizwan Fancy, a Pakistani volunteer, shared, "Every day, hundreds of Pakistanis donate and help distribute Iftar packets to make sure they reach laborers and those observing fasts."

One standout aspect of the Barsha area is the active participation of women in the distribution process. Hafidha, a volunteer from France, noted, "Barsha is unique, as women are given Iftar regardless of their religion or background."

The "Happy Happy Ramadan" campaign has received special authorization from the Dubai government to operate on such a large scale, ensuring that thousands of deserving individuals are provided meals every day during this holy month.
