Nearly one out of every three Americans reports having an “intimate or romantic” connection with AI chatbots, a new survey has revealed. The findings from Vantage Point Counseling Services show that over half of participants—specifically, 54%—see AI as a colleague, friend, or even a family member. Meanwhile, 28% of respondents say their relationship with AI extends beyond just romance or intimacy.
Many describe their AI interactions as platonic friendships, professional collaborations, personal trainers, therapists, siblings, or parents. The survey also highlighted at least 30 AI platforms with which people claim to have some form of relationship. Leading the list is GPT, followed by Apple’s Siri and Google’s Gemini among the top five.
The study noted a rise in AI relationships after a family studies institute pointed out that the U.S. is experiencing a decline in genuine human relationships. In June, one man even proposed to his AI girlfriend after a 100,000-word exchange, despite having a real partner and a child.
According to the survey, about 37.55% of participants are not actively seeking human relationships or have recently failed to form them. Additionally, 33.69% admit to cheating or casually dating while in committed relationships. Moreover, nearly 20% are without an intimate or romantic human partner but are actively looking for one.
