How Did It Happen?

A massive earthquake struck central Turkey and northwest Syria on Monday, flattening apartment buildings and adding to the devastation in cities already devastated by years of war.

The earthquake, which occurred in the early hours of a winter morning, was felt in Cyprus and Lebanon. It was followed by another large quake of magnitude 7.7 in the early afternoon.

Turkey’s most powerful earthquake since 1999, when a similar magnitude quake devastated Izmit and the densely populated eastern Marmara Sea region near Istanbul, killing over 17,000 people.
