Global Car Production in 2024

1. Record-Breaking Production Volumes in Asia

Asia, led by China and India, has maintained its dominance in the automotive industry in 2024. China remains the world’s largest manufacturer, producing over 26 million vehicles, a slight increase from last year. India is rapidly closing the gap with an impressive 6 million units, driven by government incentives and investments in manufacturing infrastructure. These two nations combined account for nearly 70% of the global car production, highlighting their crucial role in the world’s auto industry.

2. Electric Vehicles (EVs) Drive Industry Growth

The shift towards electric mobility continues to accelerate globally. In 2024, electric vehicles comprise approximately 35% of all new car production, up from 25% in 2023. Major automakers like Tesla, BYD, and Volkswagen bet heavily on EVs, expanding their manufacturing capacities. Notably, Chinese firms dominate the electric vehicle sector, with China producing over 12 million EVs this year alone. This growth is fueled by stricter emissions regulations, advances in battery technology, and consumer demand for sustainable transportation.

3. Europe’s Production Stabilizes Amid Economic Challenges

European car manufacturers faced economic uncertainties this year but managed to stabilize their production levels. Germany’s automotive sector, home to giants like Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, produced approximately 4 million vehicles in 2024. France and Spain also contributed significantly, with close to 2 million units combined. The continent is focusing on transitioning to electric and hybrid vehicles while preserving traditional combustion engine production to maintain employment levels.

4. North American Output Shows Resilience

Despite inflation and supply chain hurdles, North America has demonstrated resilience. The United States alone produced nearly 8 million cars in 2024, climbing slightly from last year. Domestic automakers, divided between traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and EVs, are adapting well. Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis continue to ramp up EV manufacturing, with domestic plants now producing over 2 million electric vehicles this year. Mexico’s assembly plants also saw increased output, serving both North American and international markets.

5. Emerging Markets Hit New Milestones

Brazil, South Korea, and Southeast Asian nations like Thailand and Indonesia are emerging as pivotal players. Brazil’s auto industry hit a new peak with over 2 million units produced, partly owing to domestic demand and export initiatives. South Korea’s Hyundai and Kia increased their global footprint by producing around 4 million vehicles, emphasizing exports, especially to North America and Europe. Southeast Asia continues to grow as an automotive manufacturing hub, with Thailand and Indonesia seeing double-digit growth rates, driven by regional trade agreements and lower production costs.

6. Shift Toward Sustainability and Smart Manufacturing

Automation, advanced robotics, and AI-driven assembly lines have become the new normal across manufacturing facilities worldwide. Companies are increasingly investing in smart factories to streamline production, reduce costs, and improve quality control. Sustainability initiatives, such as using renewable energy sources in manufacturing plants and recycling materials, are now integral to auto industry operations, reflecting a broader commitment to environmental responsibility.

7. Impact of Global Geopolitics on Production Capacities

Trade tensions and geopolitical shifts have prompted automakers to reconsider their supply chains. Power struggles between the US and China, along with recent tariffs, have led to diversification strategies. Countries like Mexico, Vietnam, and Turkey have benefited from manufacturers relocating some assembly lines to avoid tariffs and access new markets. This geopolitical environment is likely to influence global automotive production patterns well into the future.

8. Future Outlook: What’s Next for Global Car Production?

Industry experts forecast that global car production will continue to grow steadily through 2025, with EVs comprising nearly half of all new vehicles by then. Innovations in battery technology, autonomous driving, and connected vehicle systems are expected to reshape the industry landscape further. Governments’ push for stricter emissions standards, combined with consumer preference shifts towards eco-friendly cars, will likely accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility solutions.
