When replacing a motherboard in your PC, it’s essential to ensure you have everything you need to get your system up and running smoothly, especially when it comes to the Windows operating system. Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate the process and avoid potential pitfalls.

First, make sure your new motherboard comes with a product key for Windows 11. If it doesn’t, you could end up having to spend an additional $139 for a Windows 11 license. Be cautious of listings on eBay or other platforms, as they can sometimes mislabel products. For example, a listing might show a part number like 942023-001 when it should actually be 942023-601. Always double-check to avoid surprises.

Once you’ve installed your motherboard and powered up your PC, you may see a prompt from Windows asking you to activate it. This is normal; Microsoft requires a new product key if you’ve changed the motherboard.

After setting up your computer, it’s a good idea to download a free tool called Showkey Plus from the Microsoft Store. This handy app allows you to check for a product key stored in your BIOS. You can find it here: ShowKeyPlus – Free download.

If your motherboard has a Windows product key saved in the BIOS, Showkey Plus will display both the installed product key and the OEM product key. It will also tell you which version of Windows is associated with the OEM key. If there’s a product key in the BIOS, you can use it to replace the currently installed key on your hard drive or SSD and activate Windows without any extra cost.

If your motherboard doesn’t have a key or if you prefer a fresh start, you can always purchase a Windows 11 product key directly from Microsoft. Check it out here: Buy Windows 11 Home.

By following these steps, you’ll make the transition to your new motherboard much smoother and ensure that your operating system is properly activated. Happy computing!
