Recent updates have enhanced Windows 11’s Snipping Tool, but it remains a straightforward utility primarily for capturing screenshots and videos. Support for creating GIFs was only added a few months ago, highlighting its basic nature.

For more detailed or accurate screen recordings, I prefer using ShareX. Besides GIF recording, ShareX boasts advanced features such as pinpointed capture using a magnifier, scrolling screenshot capability, and timed recordings. It also allows adding annotations like arrows, lines, and text bubbles to your captures. Best of all, it’s completely free!

Here’s a step-by-step guide to utilizing the highly sought-after GIF recording feature.

Steps to follow:

  • Download, install, and launch ShareX on your device.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Print Screen. This action will display a crosshair cursor on your screen.
  • Drag the crosshair over the area you wish to record as a GIF — it will automatically select the window or section surrounding your cursor. Click your mouse button to start recording.
  • When finished, stop the recording by pressing the same shortcut (Ctrl + Shift + Print Screen) or by clicking the stop button located on the ShareX media control bar.

After completing your recording, your GIF will be saved automatically to the default capture directory, usually found at C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\ShareX\My Files.

The GIF also appears in ShareX’s task tray or “History” tab, enabling you to preview it and determine if it meets your expectations.

This concludes the “Try This” tip. Keep in mind, PCWorld offers a customizable newsletter filled with free PC tips, tricks, and updates—subscribe if you want to get this valuable content delivered straight to your inbox each week.
