How to Use Otter to Transcribe Your Life and Never Look Back

Otter is an innovative transcription app powered by AI that I rely on for my interviews. Whether I’m in a one-on-one or a group setting, it proves invaluable for journalists. It efficiently records conversations, transcribes the dialogue, identifies speakers, and allows me to click on the transcribed text to playback the audio for verification.

One of Otter’s standout features is its AI-generated summaries of discussions, helping me pinpoint key takeaways and next steps. Just yesterday, my wife expressed frustration after her non-profit organization’s secretary resigned, leaving her tasked with taking minutes for a meeting. I immediately suggested she try out Otter.

So, what benefits does Otter offer you? When you find yourself in a quick standup or a one-on-one with your manager, Otter lets you concentrate on the conversation rather than scribbling notes since it automatically creates them for you! I also find it remarkably helpful for personal appointments, such as visits to the doctor or school counseling sessions. Plus, Otter remembers speaker voices across conversations, allowing you to “tag” individuals, making it easier to track them in future discussions.

Any situation that could use extra organization, like wedding planning or discussing college finances, is a perfect fit for Otter. Simply hit the button, start the transcription, and carry on with your conversation.

Otter generates both transcripts and AI summaries, displayed in the image.

I would actually advise you not to rush into purchasing Otter just yet. The service offers a generous free plan with 300 minutes of transcription per month and up to 30 minutes per conversation, allowing you to test it during quick morning meetings. For those needing more, Otter’s business plan begins at $8.33 monthly for 1,200 minutes of transcription. It’s available on both mobile and web platforms, ensuring accessibility no matter where you prefer to work.

While Otter is an incredible tool, it’s essential to use it transparently and with the consent of everyone involved in the conversation. This not only shows respect but also helps you stay compliant with laws. Most states in the U.S. operate under “one-party consent” laws, so as long as you’re aware you’re recording, you’re good to go. However, some states, including California and Illinois, require all participants to be informed about the recording.

The reason I continue to rely on Otter? Other services simply don’t offer the same level of functionality and ease of use. It’s become indispensable for me.
