Accidentally losing important notes can be very frustrating, especially when it feels like there’s no way to get them back. Recently, I experienced this firsthand. I was using Apple Intelligence to improve my Swedish learning notes, and unexpectedly, all my original content disappeared. This included handwritten notes, pictures, and detailed information I had been working on for a week.

Unfortunately, there was no undo button or any way to recover the deleted files. The notes were completely gone, and I couldn’t find any copies or backups in the trash. It felt like everything I had spent so much time on was lost forever.

After the loss, all that was left was some unrelated, generated text that didn’t help at all. It was a harsh reminder of how important it is to back up your work regularly. If you want to avoid this kind of situation, here are some steps you can take:

  1. Regularly Save and Backup Your Notes
Make it a habit to save your work frequently. Use cloud storage services like iCloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox to keep copies of your notes. This way, even if something gets deleted, you’ll have a backup ready to restore.

  2. Check for Version History
Some apps have a version history feature that allows you to revert to an earlier version of your document. Explore your app’s options to see if this is available. It can save you if a mistake happens.

  3. Use Multiple Storage Options
Don’t rely solely on one app or device. Save important notes across different platforms or devices. For example, keep printed copies or export main notes to PDF files periodically.

  4. Be Cautious with Editing Tools
When using powerful editing or AI tools, be aware that some might overwrite your data unexpectedly. Always double-check what the tool is doing before finalizing changes.

  5. Look for Built-in Recovery Features
Some applications have recovery options built in, like undo or restore from deleted files. Familiarize yourself with these features beforehand, so you know how to use them if needed.

  6. Set Up Alerts or Notifications
If your app allows, set up notifications for when files are deleted or changed. This can give you a chance to intervene early.

While it’s sad to lose important work, taking these precautions can help protect your notes in the future. Remember, regular backups and cautious editing are your best defenses against accidental deletion.
