Among the numerous AI chatbots flooding the market—such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Grok—most are operated by major American tech companies that often monitor conversations, gather user inputs, and potentially share data beyond the user. This raises significant concerns about privacy and data security.
For individuals who prioritize privacy and want an alternative that safeguards their personal information, there is hope. Enter Proton Lumo, a recent development first highlighted in July. This service aims to provide an AI experience centered on privacy.
Proton, a Swiss-based firm renowned for its encrypted email service Proton Mail launched in 2014, has expanded its suite of privacy-oriented services over the years. Today, its offerings include Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Calendar, and Proton Wallet, all emphasizing security and user confidentiality.
Proton Lumo is the newest addition, a privacy-focused AI powered by servers located in Europe and utilizing models from companies like Mistral and Nvidia. It emphasizes user privacy by ensuring that your interactions remain private and are not stored or shared without consent.

Similar to its competitors, Lumo can answer questions, provide summaries of documents, and generate text. However, its key difference lies in the fact that all interactions remain entirely private—no one else has access to your conversation history. The trade-off is that Lumo offers fewer features than some of the more advanced AI chatbots, notably lacking the ability to create images or videos.
Users can try Lumo for free without the need to register, but additional capabilities are unlocked upon logging in. For even more flexibility and to remove usage limits, a Lumo Plus subscription is available at $12.99 per month.
