Starting with version 138, released in April, Firefox introduced a new but currently disabled feature that leverages “artificial intelligence” to generate a small preview of a linked webpage.
This functionality analyzes the target page’s content and pops up a preview window, helping users steer clear of potential scams or malware from unsolicited links. The AI-driven preview runs locally on your device and does not rely on cloud services, as clarifies Mozilla.
To enable this feature, navigate to the URL about:config, accept the security warning by clicking “Accept the Risk and Continue,” then search for the setting named browser.ml.linkPreview.enabled. If it’s not already set to true, click the toggle button with the two arrows to activate it, then restart Firefox.
To view a link preview with AI assistance, either hold down the Shift key while hovering over a link or click and hold on the link. After a brief moment, Firefox will display a preview image along with an AI-generated summary of the linked page’s content, providing a safer browsing experience.
