If you’re using Amazon EFS and are considering the Archive storage class, here are some important things to know. Currently, the Archive class is only available for EFS Regional file systems that operate using the default Elastic Throughput mode. At this time, there’s no plan to support the Archive tier on Bursting mode.
One key point is that once your file system has data stored in the Archive class, you cannot switch its throughput mode to Bursting or Provisioned. This limitation suggests that the Archive storage class is specifically designed to work with Elastic Throughput mode, which provides the performance characteristics it needs.
The Archive storage class is a great option if you need to store data that you rarely access—usually just a few times a year. It offers significant cost savings, with prices up to 50% lower than the EFS Infrequent Access tier. However, keep in mind that this class is meant for cold, infrequently accessed data and does not deliver the ultra-fast, sub-millisecond latencies that the EFS Standard class provides.
If your workflow requires both Bursting throughput mode and archive storage, you’ll need to explore other options. You might consider different configurations or even alternative storage solutions that can better fit your needs.
